Two delegations, led by Mr Qin Weizhong, Mayor of the Shenzhen Municipal People’s Government, and Mr Huang Wei, Secretary of the CPC Futian District Committee, visited City University of Hong Kong (CityU) on 5 and 6 December. They were warmly received by Professor Freddy Boey, CityU President, Professor Chen Fu-rong, Associate Vice-President (Mainland Collaboration) and Director of Research Institutes in the Mainland, and other members of CityU senior management.

President Boey extended his thanks to Mayor Qin and Secretary Huang for visiting CityU with their colleagues. Mayor Qin’s delegation, whose members included Mr Gao Shengyuan, Secretary-General of the Shenzhen Municipal People’s Government, Mr Jiang Likun, Director of the  Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of Shenzhen Municipal People’s Government, Ms Zheng Xiuyu, Director of the Education Bureau of Shenzhen Municipality, and Mr Zhang Lin, Director of the Science,  Technology and Innovation Commission of Shenzhen Municipality, visited CityU’s State Key Laboratory of Marine Pollution (SKLMP) to learn about CityU’s research achievements, such as its eco-engineered tiles, which effectively enhance marine biodiversity, pollution monitoring and control, and environmental risk assessment. They also visited the State Key Laboratory of Terahertz and Millimeter Waves (SKLTMW) to learn about CityU’s latest groundbreaking achievements in antenna design and communications technology.

The delegation presented the latest developments of the Hetao Shenzhen-Hong Kong Science and Technology Innovation Cooperation Zone for Technology and Innovation (the Zone). They discussed the “Development Plan for Shenzhen Park of the Hetao Shenzhen-Hong Kong Science and Technology Innovation Co-operation Zone”, promulgated by the State Council in August, which instructed Shenzhen Park to actively collaborate with Hong Kong Park. The objective is to set up a basic mechanism in 2025 for Shenzhen and Hong Kong to work together efficiently on innovation and technology, and develop a complete system in 2035 that can fully utilise the strengths of both cities to attain high international status with a world-leading position in the field of innovative technology.
 

A meeting was arranged for the delegation from Futian District, led by Secretary Huang, and Professor Boey and other members of CityU’s management team. Representatives of the delegation included Mr Zhu Jiang, Deputy District Mayor of Futian District and Director of Administration for Construction and Development of the Hetao Shenzhen-Hong Kong Science and Technology Innovation Cooperation Zone, Mr Xu Yang, Director of Futian District Science and Technology Innovation Bureau, Mr Zhu Junwei, Deputy Director of Administration for Construction and Development of Hetao Shenzhen-Hong Kong Science and Technology Innovation Cooperation Zone, and Mr Xiao Jing, Deputy Director of General Office of the CPC Futian District Committee and Futian District People’s Government.

During the meeting, CityU representatives highlighted the University’s latest developments, including being the first higher education institution in Hong Kong to set up an establishment in the Zone. With the support of the Futian District People’s Government in 2020, the CityU Shenzhen Futian Research Institute was established and has made significant research achievements in high-tech areas, such as electron microscopes, 4D printing, and detecting tumour cells circulating in the blood.

Secretary Huang explained that the area of the Zone will be expanded by more than 3,000,000 square metres in the future for research and development and complementary facilities. The two parties also discussed in detail topics such as the development plan of the CityU Matter Research Institute (Futian) and knowledge transfer of research achievements.

Before the meeting, the delegation visited CityU’s Hong Kong Branch of the National Precious Metals Material Engineering Research Centre and the Time-Resolved Aberration Corrected Environmental EM Unit.
