Prof. Edwin Tso and PhD Alum were interviewed by HOY TV to introduce the Passive Radiative Cooling Paint

Prof. Edwin Tso, Associate Professor of the School of Energy and Environment (SEE) and our PhD alum, Dr. Martin Zhu were interviewed by HOY TV regarding their development of passive radiative cooling paint (PRCP) for building applications. The interview was broadcast on Channel 78 HOY Infotainment on 18th November 2023.

Hong Kong has more than 50,000 buildings, and the energy consumed for cooling these buildings accounts for approximately 30% of Hong Kong’s total energy consumption. To save energy and contribute to decarbonization efforts, Prof. Tso has developed a passive radiative cooling paint. This paint can simultaneously reflect most of the sunlight and dissipate the building’s heat into the cold outer space through mid-infrared radiation, achieving a significant cooling effect and reducing the need for air conditioning.

By applying the paint to the rooftop of a building, the temperature of the rooftop can be reduced by 10°C under direct sunlight compared to an uncoated rooftop. The PRCP offers a sustainable and energy-saving solution to reduce electricity consumption in buildings.
