Prof. Chu discussed the unprecedented heavy rainfall event on September 7 in her interview with the Hong Kong Free Press

During the interview with the Hong Kong Free Press, Professor Chu Jung-Eun, Assistant Professor of the School of Energy and Environment, provided an analysis of the unprecedented heavy rainfall occurrence on September 7, 2023. This heavy downpour, which took place at 11 p.m., set a record for the highest hourly rainfall ever recorded in Hong Kong since 1884. Drawing upon her expertise in climate change and extreme weather, Prof. Chu discussed the influence of two consecutive typhoons, namely Typhoon Saola and Haiku, in causing a favourable environment for this extreme event. She emphasized that global warming is expected to intensify typhoons, resulting in more intense precipitation. This underscores the urgent need for proactive measures to address the impacts of climate change. Using observations and climate model simulations, Prof. Chu's research team is currently investigating the relationship between climate change and extreme weather phenomena, including typhoons, tornadoes, heavy rainfall, and air pollution.
