About 300 guests, staff and students turned out on 16 January for the naming ceremony of the first residential block of City University's Student Hostels Project. The block was named the Jockey Club Humanity Hall, in honour of the generous contribution made by the Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust towards the development of the student residences.
About 100 of Ms Guan Xiaoyun's traditional Chinese paper cut artworks, including the first ever showing of her masterpiece titled "Revisit of the Qinhuai River in Nanjing" - a 15 x 3 metres long artwork which took six years to complete --are on display at the CityU Gallery from 16 January to 28 February.
Because of the outbreak of SARS, also known as atypical pneumonia, City University, together with its seven local counterparts, suspended classes for two weeks, from 29 March to 13 April. Although the situation seemed alarming, the two-week suspension was an unexpected holiday for many CityU students, especially for the non-local students who live in halls.
Out-of-classroom learning experience has become increasingly important to university students these days as they prepare themselves for their careers in a competitive workplace. In December and January, 17 CityU students attended a three-week internship programme held in Chongqing, Sichuan, a municipality directly governed by the central government.

Fifteen groups of City University final-year marketing students were commended for their consultancy work at an Awards Presentation Ceremony held in the Wei Hing Theatre on 9 January.
More than 100 academics and professionals from 14 countries and regions around the world participated in the 2nd International Conference on Application and Development of Computer Games held at City University from 6 to 7 January, which presented a broad perspective of technical and application challenges to the computer game industry in the information age. More than 45 papers were presented at the conference, which was organized by CityU's Division of Computer Studies.
City University's Run Run Shaw Library has received a donation of more than 100 valuable titles covering a wide variety of Western art. The mostly rare, out-of-print editions were donated by Donald Stone, Professor of English at City University of New York. The books will be on display in the Library until January 17.
The annual Asia-Pacific Journal of Accounting and Economics (APJAE) Symposium was this year held in Shanghai----the first time the symposium has been held outside Hong Kong. More than 150 accounting and auditing academics, practitioners and students from around the world attended the 4th APJAE Symposium from 6 to 8 January at the Shanghai National Accounting Institute (SNAI). The symposium was co-organized by City University of Hong Kong.
