Marine environmental research is the subject of a talk in the on-going President’s Lecture Series: Excellence in Academia which will be held on 23 September. The talk, titled “Managing toxins in the environment”, will be delivered by Professor Paul Lam Kwan-sing, Chair Professor of Biology, Director of the State Key Laboratory in Marine Pollution and CityU’s Chief-of-Staff (Vice-President). Professor Lam is particularly interested in the responses of organisms to toxic chemicals and algal toxins, as well as the risk assessment of these compounds. This talk will assess the environmental risk of persistent toxic substances on local wildlife such as dolphins and water birds. For more information, please visit here.

France-Hong Kong Distinguished Lecture Series

Professor Pascale Cossart, a bacteriologist at the Pasteur Institute of Paris and a Member of the French Academy of Sciences, will give a talk as part of the France-Hong Kong Distinguished Lecture Series on 16 September. In her talk titled “The Bacterium Listeria Monocytogenes: A Unique Model in Infection Biology”, Professor Cossart will discuss how certain bacterial infections remain a persistent threat to public health because of their enhanced resistance to antibiotics. She will discuss her research into the use of a food-borne pathogen as a model for studying the molecular mechanisms that lie behind the process of bacterial infection with a view to developing more strategic ways of combating diseases such as TB. Inauguration of CityU Marathon Club

Long-distance running is developing a huge following at CityU. Our runners have participated in local and overseas races, and each year sees more and more CityU athletes take to the tracks. A newly formed voluntary interest club, The CityU Marathon Club, which is affiliated to the University seeks to promote the “Marathon spirit” further. The Inauguration Ceremony followed by a 2-kilometre Fun Run round the campus will be held on 25 September at the University Circle. Officiating at the ceremony will be Professor Way Kuo, University President, alumnus Mr Francis Ngai, Honorary Fellow of CityU and Chairman of the CityU Marathon Club Committee. An interactive sharing session, featuring guest speakers amputee fighter Mr Fung Kam Hung and Mr Francis Ngai, facilitated by alumnus Mr Eric Lee, will be held after the Fun Run at Hu Fa Kuang Sports Centre. All CityU community members are welcomed to join. For online registration, please click here.

Photography exhibition

Artistic expression is an important element in the campus experience at CityU, and the notion of space is of particular interest in Hong Kong, given our city’s relatively small size and population. The exhibition “Spacelessness – A joint Photography Exhibition of Max Chan, Leung Wing Yee and Garret Lai” explores issues related to spatial relationships and infinite space. Supported by the Julian Lee Photographic Scholarship, the exhibition will run from 11 September to 4 October. The opening ceremony will take place on 10 September at L3, Run Run Shaw Creative Media Centre.
