Professors Yu Huang and Huiyong Yin Attended 2023 Redox Biology and Medicine Meeting

Virtually all living organisms on Earth depend on biological processes related to redox reactions, which play a critical role in maintaining protein structures, signal transduction pathways, and various physiological and pathophysiological processes. The Chinese National Meeting of 2023 Redox Biology and Medicine took place at Xiamen University in Xiamen, China, from 10 to 13 August 2023. This prestigious event was organised by SFRBM-China (The Society for Free Radical Biology and Medicine-China), a sub-society affiliated with the Biophysical Society of China. The meeting attracted over 600 participants from Mainland China, Macau, and Hong Kong and covered seven important topics, including the detection of redox status, endogenous redox active molecules, generation and metabolism of redox molecules, redox modification and regulation of biomolecules, cell fate and quality control by redox, redox in pathophysiological processes (such as aging, metabolic syndrome, cancer, and neurodegenerative diseases) and traditional Chinese medicine, as well as redox strategies in precision intervention and control of human diseases. The meeting provided a platform to showcase the tremendous progress made by Chinese scientists in these areas in recent years.

Prof. Huiyong Yin from the Department of Biomedical Sciences (BMS) served as the Co-Chair of the meeting, alongside Prof. Chang Chen from the Institute of Biophysics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, who is also the President of SFRBM China, and Prof. Jie Zhang from Xiamen University School of Medicine. Prof. Yin has been serving as the Secretary General of SFRBM China since 2020. Furthermore, Prof. Yin chaired a workshop dedicated to multi-omics techniques in redox research, as well as a session titled “Meet the Editors,” which provided an opportunity for face-to-face discussions with the editors, editorial board members, and publishers of prominent journals in the field, including Redox Biology, Free Radical Biology and Medicine, Antioxidants, and Biophysics Reports. SFRBM China is also a member society of SFRR-Asia (Society for Free Radical Research-Asia), boasting over 500 regular members in China.

On 13 August 2023, Prof. Yu Huang, Chair Professor and Head of BMS, delivered a captivating keynote lecture titled “Hemodynamic Regulation and Endothelial Cell Homeostasis.” In addition, he was invited as a senior investigator to participate in the pre-meeting symposium on “Challenges and Opportunities for Redox Research in China,” where he joined more than sixty other panel members and experts working in the field of redox biology and medicine.
