Professor John Cheng has over 35 years of very fruitful working experience, after granted his Master degree from Graduate School of Design in Harvard University in early 90's. After that, John practiced in the US for a few years, participated in several institutional projects and international design competitions; then moved back to his hometown Hong Kong in fall 1994

Since his return John has built up a large portfolio of award-winning projects across China that includes masterplan, institutional, conference & exhibition, offices, residential and comprehensive developments. John has been involved in couple landmark icon projects in the region: Beijing Olympic Green Convention Center (2008), Huawei Technology Headquarters in Shenzhen (2001), and HK Convention & Exhibition Centre Expansion (1997). His design caliber is also well exemplified by his designed projects: City University of HK AC3/LauMingWai Building in Hong Kong (2013), QingZhuHu Shang Yi Elementary School in Changsha (2010), Nan You Retail Park in Shenzhen (2008), Luo Yang New Museum in Luoyang (2007), and Mont Orchid Riverlet residential development in Shekou (2003) which have won him honors in Hong Kong, American and Chinese institutions since 2004. John has been bringing in new thoughts to our cityscape, that besides the City University of HK AC3/LauMingWai Building with sustainability design intents, he has been key member for HD-TOD (High Density Transit Oriental Development) driven development TODTOWN in Shanghai (2007) and a demonstrative project on Smart City initiative Capital JZ Smart City Exposition in Tianjin (2013). John also applied Smart City ideas, to complete an innovative office park Namtai InnoPark in Shenzhen (2019).

In summer 2017, John joined Galaxy Entertainment Group for their Design Lead in new phase of mixed-use development Galaxy International Convention Center, with Galaxy Arena and Andaz Macau, it is opened May 2023; which also becomes his fourth convention center project experience. In spring 2021, John moved to Zhengzhou for a Director role leading a new design management team in Central China Real Estate Group on the iconic J18 Arts & Cultural Development / J18 Museum Art Park, which is composed of two Museums, Opera House, Livehouse and Ancillary blocks; they are designed by star-architects Tadao Ando, OMA, and MAD plus other international designers.

John returned to Hong Kong summer 2022, and focused mainly on teaching in tertitary institutions, and works in his boutique design studio.

Besides his professional practice; John values sharing knowledge with up-and-coming architects, he has been teaching in various institutions since 1997; and has been granted Adjunct Professor since 2012. He is keen to promote wider awareness and appreciation of architecture through various platforms: workshops, study tours, public talks, writing, and contribution to journals and newspaper columns. John believes through teaching and public engagement; that he is also benefited by the interchange of ideas, made well aware of the public needs and concerns.
