Aims of Major

The major aims to:
  1. Provide students with an environment to develop their intellectual, analytical and critical abilities, and to enable the graduates to become competent, skilled, reflective new members of civil?engineering profession.
  2. Provide students with well-developed discipline knowledge who will communicate effectively.
  3. Allow students to contribute through team and individual application of skills and knowledge to resolving problems.
  4. Provide students with a commitment to lifelong learning and leadership in the civil and building professions.
  5. Provide a basis for continuing professional development, and encouragement for professional specialization or higher academic study.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Major (MILOs)

Upon successful completion of this Major, students should be able to:

  1. Apply knowledge of mathematics, applied science, and engineering appropriate to civil engineering;
  2. Design and conduct civil engineering related experiments, as well as to analyze and interpret data;
  3. Practise as a competent engineer to design civil engineering systems, components, or processes to meet desired needs within realistic constraints, such as managerial, economic, political, manufacturability and sustainability;
  4. Function on multi-disciplinary teams in the civil engineering industry with specialism in structural engineering or?infrastructure and smart city;
  5. Identify, formulate, and solve civil engineering problems; and produce alternative civil designs, make innovation and invention in civil engineering practice in a way that benefits society;
  6. Comprehend professional and ethical responsibility;
  7. Communicate effectively by means of drawings, and oral and written presentations;
  8. Describe the impact of civil engineering solutions in a global and societal context, especially the importance of health, safety and environmental considerations to both workers and the general public;
  9. Recognize the need for, and? to engage in life-long learning, and stay abreast of contemporary issues;
  10. Acquaint themselves with the legal framework and the relevant statutory requirements;
  11. Use the techniques, skills, and modern engineering tools necessary for civil engineering practice; and
  12. Use the computer/IT tools relevant to civil engineering along with an understanding of their processes and limitations.

Professional Recognition

Structural (STL)

Eligible subject to condition(s)

Graduates of this programme are eligible for Structural (STL) Scheme “A” Discipline on condition that they have to take any one of the following courses:
(i)
CA4644,
(ii)
CA4682, or
(iii)
CA4516, which must be in structural engineering.

BEng Degree in Civil Engineering (with stream in Infrastructure and Smart City) (FT)

Logistics & Transportation Engineering (LTE)

Eligible subject to condition(s)

This programme is eligible for Scheme “A” in Logistics & Transportation (LTE) Discipline on condition that the graduates must have taken CA2676 and CA3707.


Additional Information

  1. For courses set with pre-cursor(s), ACE Department requires that all students must have attempted (including class attendance, coursework submission and examination) the precursor course(s) so identified.
  2. Where courses are assessed by a combination of coursework and examination, to pass a course, students must obtain minimum marks of 30% in both coursework and examination components, and an overall mark of at least 40%.
  3. The teaching schedules of some courses offered in Summer Term may start a few weeks earlier than the normal University schedule; students are advised to check the teaching schedules with the Course Leaders before registering for the courses.
